Kara Joy Way, M.D. (Co-Chief Resident)

I have lived in Arkansas my entire life, so choosing a medical school and residency program in the state was only natural.  But my road to Neurology has been more of a roller coaster! I started out my medical career as a registered nurse working nights in an emergency room in south Arkansas. I quickly realized that I loved medicine and wanted to take my career to the next level and have not looked back since.  I went back to college to get a Biology degree and applied to UAMS. I started medical school in 2009 with the original intent to be an ER physician, but those plans changed drastically. My interest in Neurology and the residency program here at UAMS started during my junior clerkship when I realized how incredibly fascinating Neurology can be.  I was hooked. I got to know some of the residents and faculty and they encouraged me to pursue Neurology as a career, and here I am!

My plans are to go into private practice and serve here in my home state when I finish residency, but medicine is not my entire life.  I have been married to my incredibly supportive husband, John, since 2005 and in May of 2012 we welcomed our daughter, Hope, to the family! Needless to say, things can get pretty crazy around our house! We love just spending time together, but some of our favorite activities include travel, movies, cooking, and fishing!  Being a wife and mom in residency can have its challenges, but my strong family support system has been irreplaceable.
